Hardie Board Colours Alberta 2024 - and 9 Things to Know Before Picking Your Colour!

Hardie Board Colours 2024

After a decade of frequent changes to the Hardie siding colour palette in Alberta, James Hardie has settled into a standard palette of 18 colours available for Hardie siding (pictured below). These colours are available in Plank, Panel, Shingle, and Battens:

Hardie has a separate palette of colours available for its Trim product, which is pictured below:

Below are 9 things to know about the James Hardie colours available in Alberta today:

  1. We’ve got less options than we used to! After bringing in several new colours in 2015 (all of which remain in the palette today), Hardie had up to 23 standard colour available in Panel, Plank, Shingle, and Batten. Then in 2019, James Hardie launched their Dream Collection, which gave us access to an additional 700+ colours at a premium price point.
Since the pandemic, they’ve removed our access to the Dream Collection (though it is still available in other markets) and scaled back the colour palette. We’re at 18 colours now, all of which are popular and make up a signficant share of sales in the province.

  2. All of these colours are the same price! Unlike other siding products, the standard colour palette for James Hardie is priced the same - regardless of shade or colour. Arctic White costs the same as Iron Gray - so simply pick your favourite without having to weigh any other considerations.

  3. They’ve got a different set of colours for Trim. As you’ll see in the images above, there are 18 colours available for Hardie’s siding line - but only 5 available in Trim. Don’t worry though - if you’re interested in having matching corner or window trims and looking at a siding colour that doesn’t have a matching trim - we can have it custom matched. We work with local pre-finishers to provide matching Hardie corners when needed - painted in a controlled, indoor environment.

  4. There’s a 19th colour in there! If you’re looking closely, you’ll notice that Midnight Black is an option for Hardie Trim. Because of the popularity of black trims, Hardie has had Midnight Black available for their trim products specifically for several years, despite it not being part of the standard colour palette.

  5. Primed Hardie siding is an option as well. Though we don’t use it with any frequency (99% of the Hardie siding sold in Alberta is pre-finished in the factory from James Hardie), they do offer primed materials as well so they can be painted third party. In other markets across North America, primed Hardie siding is actually the standard and the product will be installed and then painted on site afterwards. With our tough climate for painting and the advantages of a durable, pre-finished material, we don’t opt for that here with any frequency - but is an option for you.

  6. The Magnolia Collection offers a different selection of colours for Alberta at a premium price point. Curated by Joanna Gaines of Magnolia Home, the Magnolia Collection is a collection of 16 colours also available to Alberta as a special order. And while the lead times and pricing will be higher, you can take comfort knowing that the Magnolia Collection is painted by Hardie at the factory with their same ColorPlus finish.

7. Magnolia offers a different set of matching accessories. Whereas Hardie’s standard colour palette for Alberta doesn’t offer matching trim colours for every Panel/Plank/Shingle colour, Magnolia does. However, the Magnolia Collection only offers Hardie Shingle in a Straight Edge profile - so if you were set on having a Staggered Shingle accent in Dried Eucalyptus, you’ll want to reconsider!

8. The finish on Hardie siding is remarkably durable! Check out the link below for an article showing how the Hardie’s ColorPlus (pre-finished at the factory) finish holds up to hail:

9. The finish on Hardie is also extremely resistant to fading. We’ve had the opportunity to compare new pieces of siding against 18 year and 8 year old installations on South facing walls, and the finish holds up remarkably well. Check out the link below for some local examples and photos:
