Replacing Wood Siding with Hardie Board

Wood siding was one of the dominant siding products used on Edmonton homes throughout the 1900s. And to a large extent, it is a great siding product.

Typically speaking, if installed correctly, the product actually does a good job moving moisture away from the walls. And visually, a lot of the siding products we install today are still trying to match the aesthetic of natural wood siding.

However, wood siding isn’t perfect. While it may do an efficient job of moving water away from the home, and it can withstand a hail storm better than some siding materials - it is heavy on maintenance.

Everyone who owns a wood siding home dreads the next they’ve either got to waste a summer weekend painting, or paying with some frequency to have professionals paint, and re-paint your home.

For this gorgeous exterior renovation - we were helping to combat just that. Because of the beautiful tree lined yard, the North, East, and West walls of this home (also featuring wood siding), do not face near the same level of sun exposure. The South wall however, is hit heavily by long days of UV exposure. The siding shows this - with paint peeling and chipping faster due to frequent expansion and contraction of the siding, and boards to starting to shift and warp.

Hardie Plank and Trim were selected as the product to replace the wood siding on this home - and they were a wonderful choice! The dimensionally stable substrate will not expand or contract greatly, and the patented ColourPlus finish is built to withstand high UV exposure.

Night Gray Plank and Trim were installed on the South wall, and a professional painter matched the colour on the other walls of the home. This near seamless transition is hard to pick up visually, and the new Hardie ensures they won’t need to repaint any time soon!
