Modern Farmhouse Front Facade Renovation

10 panels: that’s all it took to give this bungalow an epic face-lift.

This is a perfect example of how you can achieve a major transformation with a smaller project.

Like so many homes in the Edmonton area, this bungalow was originally clad with a pebble dash stucco exterior. Then at some point about 20 years ago, someone installed vinyl siding over the stucco just on the front walls. The homeowners hated how their house looked, but weren’t ready to pull the trigger on a full exterior renovation. After reviewing their options with Paul, they selected a front façade renovation.

Once we removed the vinyl siding, we went about installing pressure-treated wood furring strips, and installed HardiePanel with vertical battens over the wood. Board and batten is a contemporary yet timeless exterior option, and it needed no accenting on this project! When it comes to board and batten projects, less is often more.

One small touch that you might notice is the frieze batten that runs along the top of the wall, right underneath the soffit line. On projects such as this one where we don’t replace the soffits, the line at the top of the wall can look a little bit wonky. Installing a frieze trim draws the eye away from the slightly crooked soffit line, and instead highlights the perfect symmetry of the well positioned batten strips. This is a small detail that adds just a few bucks to the cost of the project, but it makes all the difference in the end result!
