Mitten Brownstone Siding Renovation

New vinyl siding, Exterior Insulation, and trim boards

Some exterior renovations are more dramatic “transformations” than this one, but don’t let the fact that the new siding is similar in colour to the original stuff take away from the stately new look!

This client in the Edmonton area came to us looking for a new low maintenance exterior, and a layer of insulation panels to help keep the home more comfortable in the cold winters and hot summer months. We replaced the existing siding and brick with new vinyl siding from Mitten: Brownstone colour with a bevel profile. The exterior insulation is a 1” thick EnerSpan graphite-infused expanded polystyrene insulation panel, which adds R5 of thermal insulation value to the walls, and also provides superior breathability at 5.2 perms. The EnerSpan panels are installed over a layer of new Tyvek DrainWrap - a crinkled house wrap that allows for drainage behind the flat insulation panels. Ask a building envelope engineer - this is a “must have” when installing any exterior insulation panels!

In order to allow for the extra insulation depth, we installed 3.5” wide Smart Trim wood composite trim boards. In order to keep the windows looking consistent, the client asked us to install white trim boards around the white windows, and custom painted brown trim boards around the brown windows. The end result is that to the untrained eye, it’s nearly impossible to tell that the walls have an additional layer of insulation!
