Hardie & Exterior Insulation Renovation
Monterey Taupe siding from James Hardie looks fantastic on this bungalow, and the changes made behind the siding will keep the home warmer in the winters and cooler in the summers for years to come!
The original siding was at the end of its lifeline, and while windows had been replaced the wonderful homeowners were looking to increase the energy efficiency of the home further. As such, they elected to pair their siding replacement with the addition of some exterior insulation and air sealing.
Once the original siding was removed, we updated the exterior walls to today’s building code. A peel and stick membrane installed around the windows and doors provides an airtight seal that will also help with moisture. New flashings, vents, and a layer of Tyvek Drainwrap help take that air sealing and moisture management to the next level.
1” of exterior insulation was selected for thickness as that is the maximum thickness of insulation that can go behind Hardie siding before strapping required (which can be a fairly large added cost), maximizing the amount of R value per spend. The R5 Enerspan insulation installed should be a roughly 50% increase in the amount of wall insulation on the home, and has the benefit of being a continuous layer - bridging the studs, only breaking at windows/doors.
Finally James Hardie’s Monterey Taupe Planks and matching Hardie Trims on corners were installed on the home, with Arctic White Hardie Trim installed at openings. The end result is a gorgeous, energy efficient, renovation that keeps the character of the home’s original design.
