Hardie Board over Stucco Renovation
For this project, we got to show the answer to one of the most common questions we get from Edmonton homeowners - “can we install Hardie board over our stucco, or does it have to be removed?”
There are a variety of factors that influence the answer to this question. But in the right circumstance, yes, you can absolutely install Hardie over stucco and have it look wonderful while maintaining a full warranty!
The key here is that the homeowners planned ahead with their recent window replacements, and add extra depth to their windows. This depth has to take in both the size of the Hardie that will be going over the stucco, but also the wood straps required for fastening.
We installed wood strapping through the stucco, and then fastened our Hardie to the wood straps. When done correctly, this provides the appropriate surface to install Hardie, as seen in the gallery above.
Attention to detail here is a must. Because we were only installing a 2’ wrap on either side of the house, you’ll want to make sure you account for covering the wood strapping on the sides. We made custom metal Js to house the exposed wood on either side of the home, and then installed our Hardie trims over top. The finished product is a clean look that hides the strapping entirely, letting you focus on the beauty of the Hardie.
A custom sill detail was added below the window to add extra character to this stunning renovation.
