Hardie and Exterior Insulation Over Stucco
Careful planning and exceptional product choices allowed these homeowners to add tremendous thermal and aesthetic value to their home without removing the existing stucco!
The homeowners knew they wanted to add exterior insulation in the future, so during their window replacement they made sure their new windows were built out to an additional depth of 3.5” to leave lots of room for insulation and strapping.
The clients loved HardiePlank siding, but didn't want a messy stucco removal. We removed the old wood siding from the front of the house, and we installed treated wood strapping through the existing stucco on the sides and non-structural fiber board sheathing (also known as "buffalo board") on the front, fastened back to the studs.
1.5” IKO EnerAir was selected for the insulation - adding an approximate value of R9. Beyond adding a strong R6 per inch, IKO EnerAir has the added benefit of being a breathable insulation product, allowing moisture vapour to pass through it rather than trapping it.
Because the new windows featured bold window casings, we installed low profile custom metal trims at openings rather than the standard 3.5” Hardie Trims. This allows siding to do more of the talking, and balances the weight of the design. James Hardie siding and trim in Boothbay Blue add plenty of flair to the original aesthetic of the home, showing that when redesigning the exterior of our Edmonton bungalows, sometimes less can be more!
