Exterior Insulation and Vinyl Siding Renovation
Beautiful update to the original design
Combination stucco and cedar exteriors were quite common in the Edmonton area during the 1970s and 1980s, and they looked great… for a while. Nowadays, the stucco is often stained, faded, and sometimes has hairline fractures. The cedar is splitting, cracking, and sometimes falling apart. Time for an upgrade!
What an upgrade this project turned out to be! New vinyl siding by Royal Building products in Heritage Blue is dramatic difference compared to the drab brown stucco. White aluminum cladding replaces the thick cedar trim boards, for a lower maintenance trim option. To help with comfort level year round, the client decided on a robust layer of IKO EnerAir breathable polyiso insulation with wood strapping installed for the siding attachment layer.
The main attraction for this renovation is the vinyl shakes. That’s right, those shakes are made from vinyl - not wood! The client fell in love with Certainteed Cedar Impressions vinyl shingles, and asked us if we would install them. Of course, this product is the ultimate special order. No suppliers anywhere in Canada carry them, so we had to reach out to Certainteed directly for help getting them. Several weeks and courier updates later, we had them ready to go!
