Looking to stay warmer in the winter, these homeowners set out to change their home’s exterior! Their existing cedar and stucco siding did little to add thermal value for the home, and unfortunately the original windows had the same issue.
We had a blast working with the homeowners to design a new wall assembly that would drastically change the thermal performance of the house, and transform the look of their home.

Because the homeowners were planning to tackle both the windows and the siding, we were able to coordinate with their window company and ensure they added the appropriate depth to the windows. This allowed us to install a thick layer of IKO EnerAir over the new Tyvek Drainwrap we installed, without building out past the windows.

And because thermal value was a major factor in proceeding with the renovation, we sure added a lot of insulation! We installed a continuous layer of 2” IKO EnerAir (approximate R value of R12). Installing 2” of insulation means we needed to add wood strapping to provide a structural surface to install the vinyl siding over, so we added 1x4 wood strapping over top the insulation, and through to the studs.

The homeowners opted to have us install an additional layer of 3/4” EnerAir between the wood straps, adding even greater thermal performance. In combination with the new windows, they won’t have any trouble staying warm this winter, or cooler in the Summer!
In fact, the homeowners let us know that they usually keep their thermostat at 24 degrees over the Winter, but since the new windows and siding they’ve been able to keep that down as low as 18 degrees!

Over top of the insulation, strapping, and custom flashings, we installed Royal vinyl siding in Harvard Slate. Harvard Slate is a popular option for homeowners as it offers a modern looking shade of gray, without going either too dark or too light.

Finally, white corner posts, and soffit/fascia/eavestrough tie in with the new windows, and add some contrast and visual excitement to the design.
