Craftsman Hardie Board Renovation
A Stately new look for this classic home
These clients came to us looking for a new design, and a lower maintenance exterior than their original cedar siding. After some back and forth, they decided on new James Hardie fiber cement siding, and all new metals as well.
The clients chose Deep Ocean as their Hardie colour, going with horizontal HardiePlank lap siding for most of the walls. For a texture accent, they went with a Board and Batten feature in all three front dormers. That middle dormer was so tricky that we brought in a 45-foot articulating lift so that the crew could safely work on the soffits and the upper bit of siding - safety first!
For the soffit, fascia, and eavestrough, the clients wanted to match the windows as closely as possible. Gentek’s Almond colour ended up being a perfect match for the existing Pella windows, and it really ties the whole exterior together.
While we were able to keep the original spirit of the design, that didn’t mean the homeowners missed on the opportunity to add comfort. We updated all flashings to today’s building code, replaced the existing black tar paper to new Tyvek Drainwrap, and installed 1/2” EnerSpan insulation.
The insulation was a bit of a last minute addition. We had originally quoted the clients for an insulation upgrade, but at the time they decided to proceed without it. Once the winter blast started in earnest though, they asked us to add it back in to the final scope of work. A few phone calls later, we had a commitment from our suppliers to accommodate the rush order of 1/2” EnerSpan. We installed the insulation during a very cold stretch of the winter, and the clients happily reported that they noticed the difference right away.
