Renovating a Character Home
Deciding to renovate the exterior of your character home can be difficult. You can see from the deteriorating wood siding that the materials need replacing, but you don’t want to lose the charm of the original design.
What you’ve got is a classic looking home - and it would be a shame to lose all of that character. The wonderful thing is, with careful planning, you can have the best of both worlds! The same look, without the maintenance.
For this renovation, careful attention was paid to the design and colours of the existing wood siding. Royal Cypress vinyl siding was selected as a near perfect match. Vertical siding was used in the front gable to match the original aesthetic. Linen corners were added to tie in with the windows and doors.
Aluminum capping was installed over the existing window and doors trims. These trims add a lot of character to the home design - but also really see a lot of abuse from moisture. Adding sloped capping protects the trims and home from moisture, but also maintains that gorgeous original aesthetic.
Behind the siding, new Tyvek and 1” IKO EnerAir were installed. The EnerAir provides an R value of R6, while also being a breathable insulation product - in the situation that moisture does get behind it, it can find a way out! This will keep the home nice and warm in the winters, and the walls safe all year long.
