Hardie board siding revitalizes this unique home

Before we started the project, the cedar siding on this house had reached the end if its lifespan, and it didn’t take any special expertise to see that. In many sections the old wood had become dry and brittle, which was allowing water to penetrate behind the siding and into the framing of the home. The angled sections on the front of the house and below the windows were particularly distressed, as they collected more water and were exposed to more sunlight than the rest of the siding.

Luckily, the structure of the home was in much better shape than we and the owner had feared. After fixing some minor rot beneath one window (and fighting with an ant colony on the left sidewall) we replaced the cedar siding with fiber cement HardiePlank lap siding in Chestnut Brown, with roughsawn HardieTrim in Khaki Brown.

Because the angled wall is prone to collecting more moisture, we recommended against installing Hardie in that section. Hardie is extremely durable and very good at shedding moisture, but it is only designed to be installed on vertical walls! The client followed our advice, and we installed steel shingles for a striking accent that will stand up to the elements.

HardieShingle panels, HardiePanel board & batten, and a Fusion Stone accent finishes off this mix of traditional and contemporary design elements.
